Training Course Overview

This Applied Water Technology in Oil and Gas Production training course covers the essential chemistry involved in managing produced, connate, and flooding water-related challenges. Topics include, but are not limited to, the treatment of produced oily water, scaling and corrosion monitoring and control, bacterial growth, and wellbore pore blockage issues.

The production of both conventional and unconventional fossil fuels inherently generates large amounts of wastewater that must be treated to meet environmental standards before being released. Similarly, flooding or injection water must meet specific quality requirements to prevent issues such as wellbore pore blockage and bacterial growth. Despite the wide variation in available water sources, the importance of effective water treatment is often overlooked. Produced water, which contains oil, suspended solids, and dissolved salts, requires mandatory treatment prior to disposal. This training course will enhance understanding of effective oil and water separation, which is critical not only for water injection and reuse but also to minimize disposal quantities and comply with stringent environmental discharge regulations.

This training course will enable participants to:

  • Learn the chemistry and physics of well bore pore blockage, scaling and corrosion
  • Appreciate the biochemical effects of bacterial growth in flooding operations
  • Understand the physics as well as the mechanics of proper oil and water separation
  • Appreciate the importance of reusing produced/ formation water
  • Learn practical techniques for produced water treatment and its management
  • Appreciate from first principles the scaling process and understand the chemistry and thermodynamics of scaling

Training Course Objectives

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Learn the details of the impact of effective oilfield water chemistry
  • Understand the importance of proper water treatment
  • Comprehend how to assess oilfield production liquid separation principles
  • Understanding and resolve operational problems in process equipment
  • Develop skills necessary to evaluate the technologies used in oil and water separation
  • Gain hands on techniques with commercial scaling software and understand the chemistry behind it

Designed for

This training course will serve both as an introduction to the subject and will greatly assist the candidates to progress to a more detailed knowledge of this industry. It is suitable to a wide range of professionals and will greatly benefit:

  • Plant and field engineers
  • Chemists, new engineers needing to understand produced water related problems in the production of oil and gas
  • Engineering and technical managers and supervisors
  • Maintenance coordinators
  • Operations and manufacturing managers and supervisors
  • Foremen and team leaders
  • Those interested in obtaining a general understanding of the industry

Learning Methods

A range of interactive training methods will be used including practical exercises, case studies, question and answer sessions and group discussions to cover current practices in the field. In addition, commercial software will be used and demonstrated. Presentations will underpin topics that highlight key issues on oil water separation technologies and short films and animated exercises will be used during the program to enhance the participants’ knowledge of the subject. The training manual will support the learning experiences and provide additional reference material and examples.
